Geomod – CSTB co-development

MithraSIG is the result of the collaboration between two specialists, the CSTB (Scientific and Technical Center for Building) and Geomod, who have combined their respective expertise.

The CSTB, renowned expert with over 40 years of research into acoustics – the MITHRA code, provides state of the art simulation engines in terms of both precision and performance.

Geomod, expert in geomatics and renowned for its high reactivity and the quality of its support, brings its expertise in development and integration.

MithraSIG is an acoustic simulation software based on a GIS. The Geographical Information System* (GIS) brings accessibility and interoperability via a wide range of supported formats (both reading and writing), advanced design, editing, analysis and rendering features. The GIS software is Cadcorp SIS, originally selected by the French National Geographic Institute (IGN) for the CSTB.

Rich and intuitive

MithraSIG is designed to simplify the construction of models for simulations and the creation of renderings.

Simple construction of model

Through a simple and intuitive interface, creating the model is fast. It works either by integrating data from different formats or by using the design tools manually.

  • Supports over 160 formats (SHP, MIF/MID, TAB, DXF, DWG, DGN, etc.).
  • Basic geometry automatically imported from SRTM and Open Street Map
  • Advanced tools to create and edit objects.
  • Creating thematics, spatial queries, print templates, etc.

Clear and complete renderings

MithraSIG can create both vector and raster renderings with a powerful tool to create maps. Simple check boxes allow to set all parameters of a map: indices, sources, frequencies, color tables, raster-vector-point renderings. The map is updated in real time and dynamically when change these settings.

  • 4 map types: vertical, horizontal, building facades, and maps of receivers placed by the user.
  • Presentation of results in tables, maps, sections, 3D views.
  • Real time updates after a modification on traffic, or change of noise indicator, or enable/disable sources, etc.
  • Creation of differential maps: before/after establishment of an infrastructure, speed changes, tables of value on receivers.

Fast and accurate simulations

MithraSIG is based on the know-how of the CSTB and combines speed and accuracyin simulation.

MithraSIG uses powerful algorithms based on asymptotic methods, such as ray propagation and adaptive beam propagation.

The algorithms used are equally suitable for prediction in an enclosed environment like a city center with a high construction density, or in an open environment with vast spaces between buildings, and also in mountainous areas where the terrain topography affects propagation.

MithraSIG benefits from the work and expertise in Research and Development of the CSTB (thesis and research projects).

Standards compliance

The physical simulation engine computes noise propagation according to the requirements of current regulations, including European Directive 2002/49/CE, taking into account the effect of meteorological conditions.

  • Geometric engines ranging from rapid ray propagation to beam propagation enabling diffraction on the vertical edges of objects.
  • 64 bits software and multi-processing, using the latest available technology.
  • Calculation methods: CNOSSOS-EU, NMPB2008 (octave and 1/3 octave), ISO9613, NMPB96 (XP S31-133), Harmonoise (octave and 1/3 octave).

Flexible and adaptable to the needs

MithraSIG adapts to the size of projects, from the highly localized to huge surfaces. This makes it just as suitable for noise mapping a town, a city, or a region as it is to carrying out an impact studyor a local noise prevention plan.

MithraSIG levels concern the number of items that can be used in a model (except the terrain):

  • Up to 100 items.
  • Up to 1 000 items.
  • Up to 10 000 items.
  • Up to 100 000 items.
  • No limit.

All is included

The basic version of MithraSIG include everything: roads, railways and industrial sources. This is a multi-thread version full 64 bit.

  • Railway sources, using the French SNCF railway database.
  • Industrial sources are: point, facade, linear and volume sources. Use the Imagine database (European database offering over 1200 sources).
  • Analysis: create renderings for analysis: raytracing visualization, combine gridded maps with formulas, campaigns of measurements.

Decision support and communication

MithraSIG allows to produce high quality documents, in particular dynamic PDF files (with layers, attributes and et geo-referencing). These lightweight PDF files can be easily sent by email for renderings.

With MithraSIG, the dissemination of the maps can be in various forms:

  • Tiles for the web diffusion.
  • KMZ allowing the visualization in Google Earth™.
  • Over 50 formats, both vectors et rasters (SHP, TAB, ECW, JPEG, TIFF, BIL, …).

MithraSIG - Rendering

MithraSIG also allows to measure the acoustic impact on the population of future projects. The 2D and 3D maps are powerful communication vectors. They provide an objective opinion in public debates related to a new infrastructure or development.


In France, MithraSIG is used by technical services of Ministries, regional and local authorities, design offices, associations, research departments and universities.
